Local Natives (formerly named Cavil At Rest) could simply be described as “what the game’s been missing.”  They released Gorilla Manor in 2009, coming at the heels of 3 years of amazing indie releases from bands like Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer, Band of Horses, and Fleet Foxes, and blended their sounds into one enjoyable whole.  Maybe less obvious is their lyrical imagery influenced by Death Cab For Cutie’s simple but effective songwriting.  Take a song like World News, where the only thing the song is about is a boring drive home.  (“You don’t like anything on local radio, so you fumble around till you land of NPR, and listen to world news.”)  What’s even more surprising then, is on their best days as Cavil At Rest, they were mining the sounds of Minus The Bear (!).

Long story short:  one of the best “new” bands to come out in recent memory, and they deserve a lot of attention.

  • Scissor RunnerJenny and Johnny

As Trey could testify, I’m not a fan of any project that Jenny Lewis puts her name on.  That being said, I know her position as the female voice of the indie rock scene.  Jenny and Johnny, the duo of Lewis and her boyfriend Jonathan Rice, does come a little late to the boy-girl indie trend that we have had plenty of already (Mates of State, Matt & Kim, She & Him, etc.).  But with Jenny’s experience in the scene, they sound less “in the moment” and more classic.

I’m not introducing anyone new today, I just want our followers to know that there is a new Deerhunter single out there.  As far as plain old indie rock goes, I think these guys are one of the best bands doing it.

Interpol @ The Norva

I’ve been waiting for this night for awhile and even longer to see this band who I’ve enjoyed for so long. The opening band Twin Tigers played a pretty nice set and their sound fit well to open for Interpol. But I won’t discuss much on them. They weren’t bad at all but they weren’t amazing.

The moment finally came for Interpol to hit the stage. Opening with a new song from their up-coming album showed just how much you didn’t even need to have ever listened to a song by them to tell its they’re good at what they do. They followed the new with an old classic, Evil. As soon as the bass kicked in everyone knew to follow with, “Rosemary!”. It was amazing and the crowd was a good one to be a part of.

They continued sprinkle in a couple new songs here and there but the majority of their set was the good oldies everyone loves. With songs like PDA, NYC, and Narc in the set, anyone who knows Interpol knows that’s a set worth going to see.

Their encore was intense starting out with Leif Erickson and following with Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down. Both of which blew my mind at how good these guys are at putting on a show and playing great music. Last but certainly not least, my personal favorite, Obstacle 1 was their closer. The fast upbeat tempo and everyone screaming, “She can read! She can read!” was so intense. This was definitely a show to go see and if you missed out then you should regret it. But on a lighter note the boys in Interpol will be back soon after the release of their new album next month.

UK indie rock just never fails.  I haven’t listened to this band much aside from “that” single of theirs (the amazingly catchy Let’s Dance To Joy Division), but this new stuff sounds promising.

  • MY KZ, UR BFEverything Everything

I found this band called Everything Everything last night and I had to just take a second to respect their originality.  I mean, they aren’t exactly groundbreaking, I’d say that they fit right inside of the post-Klaxons/post-MGMT spaced out indie rock scene, but they pay more attention to small details in their music than either of those bands.  It’s definitely worth a listen.

  • This Land Used To Be My Land, But Now I Hate This LandPomegranates

I’ll forgive you if you’ve never heard of the band Pomegranates, because they slipped through my musical cracks as well.  It’s a shame because their type of indie rock fits well with all the bands I already like and I wish I could have been enjoying them sooner.  I guess that’s funny how life works out, when people with similar tastes come into your life, they help fill you in on what you’re missing out on.  Anyway, Pomegranates put a nice emphasis on the mood and atmosphere of their songs, which makes it sound almost like post-rock.  You can listen to their album Everybody, Come Outside! right here.

Sometimes the best bands are just as straightforward as can be.  That’s the case with Tapes ‘n Tapes, who could be labeled as indie rock with no other mix of subgenres needed to describe their sound.
